An old article..
https://m.rediff.com/news/2008/aug/28sai.htm
But it stands true today as well.
When some of my very good friends blame mumbai for lobbying should actually ask the marathi people living there how the real lobbying has affected them.
Non marathi lobby is a big truth that is plainly denied yet has been experienced by many of us.
Me and my family were not real mumbai kar/thanekar/ kalyankar. We belonged to different parts of maharashtra yet mumbai made us get dissolved in it easily. We got educated in marathi medium yet we take a proud in telling that marathi and english goes very well together for us. Hats off to the schools and our teachers.
Well, coming to the actual point. It is true that people could easily live here without speaking or blowing a word if Marathi. Unlike other parts of maharashtra like pune kolhapur , mumbai welcomes all other languages. In fact more. It is so much and such true thay even we few marathi friends also used to speak in Hindi and rarely used marathi during conversation.
And I realize now we were not allowed then by our friends to speak in marathi in the group and even today when we are residing in different states and when we rarely happen to meet any other marathi manus.. we are strictly told not to be using Marathi.
Thay was about the language.
And about lobbying
Me, my family members and many other marathi people have often become the victims of non marathi lobbying during college admissions and all. Thankfully schools were marathi only so we thrived there.. but during college days, even after having much better percentage and score getting admissions used to become a difficult task.
Moreover the management quota was never there for marathis.
Even at college libraries we used to take a help of our non marathi friend to get access to reference books that they easily had access to.
Still we never spoke up...Because it hardly mattered for us. We were happy not speaking marathi..And none of us ever complained.
But when few of us speak about "injustice" that happens to non marathi people in Mumbai... I have to remember all that stuff thay we had to go through yet never complained about or never gave it so much importance.
We today know only something that happens in past few years. When some political parties took extreme steps to revive "marathism". Which I had never supported.
Something that is not good.. is never good..
It was just a political thing, it was just a political.issue. Which is only remembered now.
But please know that .. that's not mumbai ...Mumbai never snatched or robbed you off your language. If you read through this article you will probably understand :)
